Definition
The number of demerits that a participant has accrued that are currently valid, represented by a total count. A demerit is a penalty given to a participant for committing a mutual obligation failure without providing a valid reason for that failure's occurrence. Demerits are active for 6 commenced months, after which they individually expire. If a participant’s Contract referral placement status is changed to paused or pending, their demerit's lifespan will also be paused until their status changes back to commenced.

Comments
One demerit is given for most failures, but failing to act on a job referral or misconduct at a job interview results in a fast-track demerit worth three points. The number of demerits determines the participant's zone and whether they need to undergo a capability interview or assessment.
